MegaBoost Web Accelerator and AntiSpyware

Some antispyware products such as Microsoft Antispyware will detect the MegaBoost accelerator as an unknown object or process. This page explains the various elements of MegaBoost and how is may be detected.

MegaBoost accelerator is not spyware. It is installed by you with your knowledge. Since the software installs components in locations that spyware commonly occupies, it may be detected as spyware. The following elements may be listed by your antispyware software:

Startup Programs

The MegaBoost client software is added to your startup folder during installation. Specifically, it is placed in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup for Windows XP and Windows 2000. The files in the startup folder are called "MegaBoost Accelerator" or "slipcore.exe" and "slipgui.exe."

If your antispyware program detects "MegaBoost Accelerator" added to your startup folder, you may approve the change.

Browser Helper Objects

The popup blocker component of MegaBoost installs itself as a Browser Helper Object (BHO) in Microsoft Internet Explorer. Specifically, it is called PBlockHelper.dll.

If your antispyware software detects a BHO called PBHelper or PBlockHelper, you may approve it.

Winsock LSPs

MegaBoost installs four items classified as Winsock Layered Service Providers (LSPs). The names are SlipStream LSP, SlipStream LSP over [MSAFD Tcpip [TCP/IP]], SlipStream LSP over [MSAFD Tcpip [UDP/IP]], and SlipStream over [MSAFD Tcpip [RAW/IP]].

If your antispyware detects SlipStream LSP, you may approve it.

Running Processes

MegaBoost runs as processes called slipgui.exe and slipcore.exe. These may be seen in the Windows Task Manager or by various "system explorers."  It does not run any services.
